James E Whittington

I make art out of people

  1. Improvisation
Physically rigorous, my approach to improv is this: I believe the only way to the mind is first through the body. The best improvisers live in the now. It's just that sometimes you have to run to get there.
  2. Acting
My first paid gig was as a puppeteer's apprentice. From there I studied a classical, Stanislavskian method of acting. Then came Meisner. Then mask work. Then Viewpoints, improv, and some clowning. From these different acting styles, my teaching and directing point of view emerged.
  3. Writing
With a writer's room approach in mind, I work with the expectation that the writer isn't expected to always "go it alone." Instead, I teach the value of working in a group, bouncing ideas "off the room" to build an original play or sketch review.

"Amazing.", "Caring.", "Best teacher I've ever had."
